Summer is a time when everyone is searching for things to do but always ends up sitting at home to stay cool. Don’t let the heat get you down this summer! There are plenty of summer activities for seniors that they can do while still being able to stay out of the heat, and since summer has just begun, this is the perfect time to choose the right hobby!

Walking allows seniors to get some low impact exercise. Although walking outdoors can be a difficult thing to do in the Texas summer heat, morning or afternoon walks are great to avoid the hottest part of the day. Be sure to bring a water to stay hydrated!
Whether it’s you or your loved one that needs the exercise, always bring along a friend. Having someone to talk to while you’re walking is a great way to keep your mind off of the exercise and before you know it you already walked a mile or two.
Take a day trip
If you don’t enjoy the outdoors or can’t stand the heat, explore places to visit within your own neighborhood. See a new movie or musical production happening at a local theater. Museums and gallery openings not only offer an exciting new cultural experience, but they also allow you to get your walk in for the day. Most of these types of places offer senior discounts as well.
Spend some quality time with family by bringing them along. Everyone can benefit from getting out of the house and enjoying a new experience. Make a day of it by picnicking at the park or visiting your favorite restaurant beforehand.
Even if you don’t have a green thumb, gardening can be a great way to relax and get some fresh air. Many express that keeping up with a garden is therapeutic for your mind and is also a great way to burn calories. It can also build hand strength and flexibility within joints. There are plenty of community gardens to work in with other planting enthusiasts if you do not have space of your own.
Look at gardening as a way to not only improve your exercise but also your nutrition; you’re moving around the entire time, stretching your muscles and working your joints and then you get to enjoy the rewards later through delicious fruits and vegetables!
A great way to get out of the summer heat is to get into a swimming pool. A lot of recreation centers or public swimming pools offer water aerobics classes which can get your heart rate up while you are cooling off in the water. Some pools also have “Senior Only” times in order to have a trip before the kids hit the pool. Be sure to remember your sunblock!
Join a senior center
Senior centers allow you to meet other older adults in your community that may have shared interests. Summer is also the perfect time to take up a new hobby. Senior centers offer a variety of classes that help you to explore new hobbies or stick to old ones. Some classes and clubs the senior centers offer include dance, arts and crafts, jewelry making, scrapbooking, photography, fitness, quilting, or cooking, just to name a few. Broaden your knowledge and try something new!
